Blues Basics
NEW to the Blues? Sometimes it is hard for those new to the Blues to explore this journey called the Blues! IllinoisBlues.com's weekly spotlight introduces (or reminds experienced Blues fans) about a Blues artist or subject worth knowing about. This week we take a look at one of the most influential guitarists ever, Albert King.
Born Albert Nelson on Apr 25, 1923 in Indianola, MS he started out playing gospel music in Arkansas. After King heard some early Blues artists like Blind Lemon Jefferson, he began playing Blues instead.
A large man at 6 foot 4 and 250 Lbs, King's left handed guitar style had a significant effect on his sound. Instead of bending notes up like a right handed guitarist, King pulled the notes down resulting in a distinct sound. The sound of his single note sting bending style is still copied by both Blues and Rock guitarists. His signature use of the Gibson Flying V guitar also continues to influence rock guitarists.
King played in Arkansas until 1953 when he moved to Gary, Indiana where he ended up playing drums in a group with Jimmy Reed. At about this time he changed his name to Albert King shortly before he met and played with Willie Dixon.
In 1954 King moved to St Louis where he headlined clubs and enjoyed his first successes recording. His single "Don't Throw Your Love on Me So Strong" made it to #14 on the national R&B charts in 1961.
King's real stardom started after he signed with Stax records in 1966 where he teamed up with Booker T. & the MG's to produce a soul Blues sound which provided some of his most notable work. His 1967 release "Born Under a Bad Sign" was a huge success that influenced both Blues and rock guitarists including Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton. In 1972, he released "I'll Play the Blues for You" which continues to influence Blues artists today.
All Music Guide has a biography and a complete discography of Albert King. CLICK HERE to read to read more about him. They also include 15 second samples of most of his songs for you to listen to.
There is also an good biography of him by Greg Johnson on the Cascade Blues Society's website. CLICK HERE to read it.

James “Skyy Dobro” Walker , noted Blues writer and IllinoisBlues.com contributor reviews a new CD by Dave Hole - Rough Diamond

By James “Skyy Dobro” Walker

Who are the best five, living, electric slide guitar players in the world? If Dave Hole is not on your list, it is time to reevaluate! Hailing from Perth in Western Australia, Hole is a master of unique tones where steel strings are tickled and tortured by brass tubing. Born in England in 1948, he moved with his family to Australia when he was a child. He fell for the blues early on when he heard a friend's Muddy Waters record. 44 years later and seemingly out of nowhere, this guitarist/vocalist/songwriter burst onto the American music scene in 1992. Declared one of the most exciting and original slide guitarists, his subsequent five successful Alligator Records albums and live shows earned him critical praise.
Rough Diamond is Hole’s first release on Blind Pig Records. From originals like the title track “Rough Diamond Child” (which opens with an ear grabbing sonic assault), “Can’t Stop Loving You” (with an instantly likeable catchy bounce and sing-a-long lyric), and the slow and shimmering “Yours For A Song” to covers including “Rambling On My Mind” by Robert Johnson, “White Trash Girl ” originally popularized by Willie DeVille, and Buddy Holly’s “Think It Over,” these rock-side-of-blues performances feature note stretching and bending that channel the spirit of blues and rock slide legends such as Elmore James, Duane Allman, and Johnny Winter.
Hole is unique in his over the top of the guitar method of playing with the slide on his index finger. Stylistically, Hole separates himself from the slide playing pack, who use a few familiar patterns, to create an endless series of tones, sounds, and sonic leaps from bass to treble to outer reaches of the solar system. An example is found in the song “White Trash Girl” where, in the first and second guitar solo breaks, Dave plays a series of phrases, but he gives each one a completely different sound and tone.
Faithful fans and new comers alike will be well rewarded to import this Aussie’s album into their collection. Click on these song titles to hear a 1 minute sample of a few songs from the album. Vintage Wine Yours For A Song White Trash Girl To Purchase this CD - CLICK HERE

Nappy
Brown
Long Time Coming
Blind Pig Records
Running Time: 46:43
The title is very apt for Napolean Culp A.K.A. Nappy Brown. Brown was one of the big hitters on the rhythm & blues charts of the late fifties, producing hits for Savoy Records and helping Ray Charles a little bit along the way (Brown penned “The Right Time” which Charles copped into “Night Time Is the Right Time”). Brown also helped pen a few blues staples, too. The song “Little By Little” comes to mind. After 1962, Brown went into obscurity and has labored on in his home land of North Carolina ever since, doing tours with former Muddy Waters Band guitar player Bob Margolin here and there.
It was that relationship, along with the relationship between Margolin and Scott Cable that helped this disc come to our ears. Cable, wanting to channel Brown’s presence through modern day players, gathered a rather who’s who of young players and a few veterans, too to help mold this disc into one of the best soul-blues outings of 2007 and a large reawakening of the classic days of R&B. I wish a big congratulations to Blind Pig, as well, for putting out one of the best discs they’ve produced in two years.
Brown treats us with a few of his old hits, reworked with the help of Sean Costello, Junior Watson, John Németh, Mookie Brill, Jim Pugh, and The Mighty Lester Horns. The set list is a virtual run down of a classic R&B smorgasbord of original material that ranges from the swing made popular by the blues shouters, the soul ballads of Jerry Butler, to straight ahead blues (listen to the burning guitar of Watson on “Every Shut Eye Ain’t Sleepin’”). Brown also tips his hat to his roots as a gospel singer on “Take Care of Me,” which the singer admitted he didn’t want to do but through Cable’s pressing did it anyway and the producer’s ear does not disappoint. Brown also gives beautiful readings of Eddie “Cleanhead Vinson’s classic “Cherry Red,” which was penned by another of Brown’s vocal idols Big Joe Turner.
For classic R&B fans as well as the soul blues crowd, this disc should be an absolute must-have. Traditional blues fans might appreciate the stripped acoustic of “Cherry Red,” which Bob Margolin gives guitar chops to. I would also expect to see this cross a few BMA ballots come February, too. Chicago Blues Update
Live Blues reviews by Chicago Blues editor Lordy
Blues Beat: Chicago, Saturday September 29, 2007 (Photos by August Lord)
John Primer & the Real Deal blues band at The Harlem Avenue Lounge
I had the great pleasure to take in another show by John Primer & the Real Deal blues band. This band truly is the real deal in the Chicago blues genre.
John, who was in Theresa’s house band before becoming Muddy Water’s guitarist, is steeped in our town’s music, in voice and with picks or slide. He is one of our high profile stars and so we frequently have to share him with gigs around the world.
At the end of the month John takes his band on a Turkey and Siberia tour. Just that thought helps me appreciate how fortunate we are to have talent like this in our backyard. Through the ChicagoBluesBeat website, we have the opportunity to correspond with blues fans everywhere. Only days prior to this gig, fans from Holland where asking where they could take in Pryor and Morrison’s blues while in Chicago.
Mike Morrison on bass, and Vernon Fletcher on drums (although he also plays bass), have each accumulated many miles globetrotting the blues. Dan Beaver on harp and Dave Ross on keyboards, although baby-faced have already been initiated as blues road warriors.
John, Mike, Vernon, Dan and Dave can all sing as well as play their respective instruments, and Primer frequently gives them the nod to do so. This night’s show was at Kenny Z’s Harlem Avenue Lounge in Berwyn, Illinois. Harlem boasts a very good sound system, and Kenny, the proprietor can be seen tweaking the boards from time to time, as everyone got their turn to shine.
This band has fun, as you can see from the pictures, and it is contagious. In answer to a request Primer led his guys through a rendition of Rhinestone Cowboy, and even that was good. Special guest vocalist Delores Scott stood in for a while and kept the party going.
Remember, that if you’re at Harlem Avenue Lounge on a weekend evening, you will see a great show. If you happen to spend your weekends in Siberia, you’re still in luck.
