Hey Blues fans,
The Old Capitol Blues & BBQs show in Springfield, IL was a blast last week! IllinoisBlues.com was there and we have pictures for you! CLICK HERE to see them |
This Friday night you can hear what a GREAT Christian Blues artist sounds like when Glenn Kaiser performs at the Glen Oak Park Pavilion, 2200 Glen Oak in Peoria, IL. I was fortunate enough to have a friend convince me to go hear Glenn for the first time about 4 years ago and I make it a point to hear him anytime he plays nearby. Glenn is a great solo acoustic blues player and often fronts a fantastic electric Blues trio. Glenn is going it alone for this show but that is a real plus for all you acoustic Blues lovers. He will amaze you! There is no admission charge but a free will offering will be taken at the show to help defray expenses and to help support the work of the Peoria Outreach Center Church. Like many Blues shows you get to hear some great Blues classics by legends like Robert Johnson and Reverend Gary Davis. You will also get to hear some of Glenn's great Blues originals. The show starts at 7:00pm. Here is a video of Glenn with his band for you to check out.

Also this weekend brings the Dusk til Dawn Blues Festival in Rentiesville, OK, the Illinois Blues Fest in Peoria, IL, and the Hot Springs Blues Festival in Hot Springs, AR.

Blues Basics
NEW to the Blues? Sometimes it is hard for those new to the Blues to explore this journey called the Blues! IllinoisBlues.com 's weekly spotlight introduces (or reminds experienced Blues fans) about a Blues artist or subject worth knowing about.
This week we spotlight the Reverend Gary Davis. He was an amazing Blues, gospel and ragtime guitar player that has inspired many Blues players including Glenn Kaiser who is performing in Peoria, IL this weekend (Show info is included above!). One song Reverend Gary Davis wrote is called "Death Don't Have No Mercy" and it has been performed by many blues greats. This Blues fan first heard the tune on a Hot Tuna album in 1974. It has been covered by artist as wide ranging as Bob Dylan and The Grateful Dead. |

It’s finger snapping, hipster music! It’s energized and fun! And, it should be among the five nominees for Best New Artist Debut at the Blues Music Awards. This CD made me, a weekly album reviewer with limited time, listen to it over and over. That’s how great this album of West Coast, Jump-Blues is.
There probably hasn’t been a totally unique guitar solo passage created in decades, but these guitar riffs sound inventive and fresh when performed with creative bounce and joy like in the playing of 25-year-old Vyasa Dodson. Equally imaginative, two-fisted piano and organ trade leads with the guitar, courtesy of Alex Shakeri, in a traditional manner defining West Coast Blues. All notes are placed judiciously with no extensive, note wasting solos as most songs are shorter than four minutes.
The songs themselves are full of Dodson’s stylized, want-to-sing-along vocal phrases and harmonies, plus there are catchy musical hooks and turnarounds that are in your brain to stay by the second listen. Impressively, nine of the twelve songs are Dodson originals. With no studio overdubs using horns or such, the foursome recorded the CD to combine various flavors of slow blues, Jump, Swing, Rock and Roll, Twists, and Shuffles that will drive ducks out of the water just to dance.
Justly so, the 4-piece band, with rhythm section of Dean Mueller – bass and Dave Melyan – drums, won the Cascade Blues Association Muddy Award for “Best New Act” of 2006. For a quick tutoring in West Coast Blues, here is the sweet synthesis of decades of top players of the genre from Lowell Fulson and Big Joe Turner to Junior Watson, Hollwood Fats, and Little Charlie Baty to today.
Standout tracks include: “Wrong King of Love” with a “Night time Is The Right Time” beat, a popping instrumental “Crime Scene,” the opening dance starter track, “Stick Around,” and a bonus live track, “No Wine, No Women.”
The slightest downer: the staring, bloodshot eyeball artwork on the cover. I agree with the fan who wrote, “Congratulations! Although, I must say...that eyeball is giving me the willies!”

Chicago Blues Update
Live Blues reviews by Chicago Blues editor Lordy
Blues Beat: Chicago, Saturday August 8, 2007 (Photos by August Lord)
I have been in a blue funk since The Peppercorn closed months ago. Therapy has been expensive and time consuming. However, I am happy to report on another venue in my own back yard that features live blues. The morning after my visit there, I called my shrinkologist to free up his Thursday mornings. The Genesis Restaurant & Night Club is in the Southwest suburb of Country Club Hills and features live blues twice a week. On Sundays you can hear Vance “Guitar” Kelly & The Backstreet Blues Band. I took in the Wednesday regular, Billy Branch & the Sons of Blues. This place has free parking and no cover, but a two drink minimum. Hell, I have a four drink minimum so this was not an obstacle. It is clean and comfortable and features a well-lit stage area with a pro sound system. When the band breaks, DJ Rock a.k.a. The Baby Boy plays, of all things, blues and R&B. The bottom line is that you get world-class acts for just about nothing. There is not a bad seat in the house, but there were a few empty ones with your name on them.
Billy Branch is The Harmonica Man. Yes, those words are capitalized. His long-time rhythm section is Nick Charles on bass and Moses Rutues on vocals and drums. Giles Corey on vocals and guitar can take center stage comfortably anytime Billy Branch gives him the nod. Musical genius Ariyo rounds out the band on the 88’s. Blues diva Nellie “Tiger” Travis frequently guests and my visit also included some songs by Marilyn B and Randy Johnson. Billy Branch is a true showman. He can walk into the crowd with his wireless mic and make the ladies blush, he can make his harp growl or even chirp, and the man serves up some serious blues. Moses’ vocals are grabbing while Giles and Ariyo provide virtuoso level solos. In other words those S.O.B.s can really play the blues. - Lordy
