This week we spotlight David "Honeyboy" Edwards.

David is the last living link to the immortal Robert Johnson since the passing of Robert Jr. Lockwood in 2006. Born in Shaw, Mississippi in 1915, he often played with Robert Johnson.

The video below is a clip of David playing in February 2007 with Earwig Music CEO Michael Frank on harmonica.

Honeyboy turned 92 years young this June and is still playing all over the world, currently on tour in Europe.

It just proves that music keeps you young!

France's Blues Magazine will tap you into the real Blues scene in France. There's a ton of information and links cool to the French Blues fan including a link to some 24/7 streaming Blues radio. Unfortunately it is all in French so if you are not fluent in French you will be lost like we were when you get to this webpage.  It is still kinda fun to look around and poke a bit anyway. If you are persistent you will eventually find the streaming link, W3 bluesRadio, like we did. No worries though, we have figured it out for you. Simply CLICK HERE to listen

 Blues Reviews of the Week!

James “Skyy Dobro” Walker , noted Blues writer and IllinoisBlues.com contributor reviews BLUE Voodoo's CD - Hot Wire (My Heart)

Blue VooDoo

True of False: “There ain’t no right or wrong way to play the blues”? That line is from the last cut on Blue VooDoo’s third album, Hot Wire (My Heart). If the statement is false, then we blues fans and critics can merrily continue our intellectual and pseudo-intellectual arguments about what tis the blues, and what taint. Obviously arguing for “truth,” the sultry and accomplished lead vocalist for the Kirksville MO quartet, B.J. Allen, sings that as long as the music “starts deep down in your heart / Till it seeps down to your shoes” then there isn’t a right or wrong way to play the blues. Sounds like an argument starter to me!

Here is some inarguable truth: Hot Wire (My Heart) is a great rocking-blues album. All twelve tracks are winners, and eleven tracks were penned by either Fuller or Hurd as the band continues to develop their own blues signature. Now in their 5th season, Blue Voodoo has already logged two performances at the International Blues Challenge (2005 and 2006) and their previous release, "The Storm", was a semi-finalist in the "Best Self-Produced CD" competition at IBC 2006.

Jerry Fuller’s 36-seconds piano opening to Track 6, “Blue As Blues Can Get” is so good I would buy the album even if that was the only song on it. After Fuller sets the mood on this slow blues number, J.P. Hurd fills the sound on bass along with David Daniels on drums. Just as the song begins to sound like Eric Clapton’s “Old Love,” Allen’s voice sadly and softly comes in relating her sorrowful and solitary plans for the evening. From there her powerful voice wells up in volume and hurt while plaintively punctuated by Fuller’s added guitar track. No song ever needs to be better than that!

Simply said, I’m entranced: Blue VooDoo, go do those voodoo blues that you do so well!

 Chicago Blues Update

Live Blues reviews by Chicago Blues editor Lordy

Blues Beat: Chicago, Saturday August 4, 2007 (Photos by August Lord)

Harpist and singer, Harry Garner feels strongly about the blues and live Chicago blues in particular. Harry is a disciple and an outspoken advocate of the genre. The Harry Garner Band ran that philosophy through the amplifiers at The Harlem Avenue Lounge on Saturday night to the delight of the blues faithful in the house.

Harry’s band mate, guitarist Mark Wydra also contributes to the vocals and banter. Mark the Shark occasionally shows some nice rockabilly influence and is willing to buy a drink for the patron that can answer his blues trivia questions. The rhythm section consisted of veteran Al Lopeztello on drums and Mr. Harlan Terson on the four string Fender bass. Harlan and his metronomic bass playing are in constant demand in the Chicago blues scene. The word “solid” came to mind, upon hearing Harlan and Al in the pocket for three sets.

On of my favorites from The Harry Garner Band set list is Hoyt Axton’s The Pusher. Don’t even ask what this (rock) Steppenwolf song and (country) Hoyt have to do with the blues, until you hear this band’s version.

Harry’s special guest on this night was singer Ramblin’ Rose. Before Rose went on stage, she engaged me in very pleasant and polite conversation. With a microphone in her hand, however, Rose rip it up, rip you up, or make you blush at will. Later in the month, Ramblin’ Rose and The Harry Garner Band will be playing at The Record Row Festival in Willie Dixon’s Blues Garden.

For the second night in a row, 3:30 AM found me lugging my camera bag back to my free parking spot. Sure I was irritated that the music had to stop, but then if it didn’t I wonder if I would ever go home.  -  Lordy

 Blues Society News

Call for Blues Performers

The West Virginia Blues Society is calling for Blues bands and solo/duo blues acts to compete for cash prizes and WVBS sponsorship to the Blues Foundation's International Blues Challenge held every year in Memphis, Tennessee.

The Appalachian Blues Competition will be conducted October 6, 2007 at the Holiday Inn-Charleston House Hotel in Charleston, WV.  The West Virginia Blues Society has 18 competition slots to be filled by regional blues acts from all over West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland and other states. As the competition grows, so does the level of talent. If your band has the Mojo this could be your ticket to Memphis for the Big Show. This is the ONLY Blues Talent Competition in West Virginia recognized by the Blues Foundation. So, tune up and show up with your best Blues.

While the competition cannot be considered a purely "amateur" contest, the goal of The International Blues Challenge is to seek out the best "undiscovered" Blues band and the best "undiscovered" solo/duo Blues performer in the United State and beyond. The IBC is a real opportunity for discovery to musicians that are truly unknown and unsigned to a record company.

The International Blues Challenge in Memphis is restricted to acts representing an affiliated organization of the Blues Foundation, of which WVBS is one.  The IBC is the largest gathering of blues bands in the world (around 150) and has evolved into the Nation's most respected showcase for Blues musicians ready to take their act to the national stage. Each affiliate of The Blues Foundation has the right to send a band or a solo/duo act to represent the organization at the IBC Semi-Finals on world famous Beale Street in Memphis. The list of blues greats that have competed in the IBC over the years is impressive indeed: Slick Ballinger, Michael Burks, Tommy Castro, Albert Cummings, Delta Moon, Larry Gardner, Dianna Greenleaf, Zac Harmon, Richard Johnston, Matthew Skoller, Susan Tedeschi, John Weston and Michelle Wilson. Musicians from around the world have commented that just getting the chance to play on historic Beale Street is worth the trip.

The first-place winner of Blues Competition will receive $750 dollars in cash and WVBS sponsorship to the International Blues Challenge in Memphis in early 2008, where they can gain valuable exposure to record label A&R representatives Blues industry professionals, and festival promoters capable of providing real career advancement for a serious blues musician. The second place winner will receive $200 in cash and third-place winner will receive $100 in cash. The big winners, however, are the Blues fans who enjoy a day of Blues entertainment.

Winners at The International Blues Challenge in Memphis,  the city considered by many as the home of the Blues and the birthplace of Rock 'n Roll, receive cash and prizes such as professional consultations and assistance, gigs at some of the country's best festivals, interviews in the world's leading Blues publications, free website design and hosting, and even a slot on the "2009 Legendary Rhythm and Blues Cruise."

CONTACT PERSON FOR COMPETITION PARTICIPANTS: Complete information, application & rules are available online at  http://www.wvbluessociety.org/appalachian_blues_band_competiti.

Deadline for application submission is September 1, 2007. For more information contact Competition Director, Jack Rice at 304-389-1439 or e-mail: bkravenhawk@hotmail.com or Assistant Competition Director, Steve Criner at 304-549-2486 or e-mail: stephencriner@yahoo.com
