Hey Blues fans,

This weekend brings a couple of great Blues fests in the Central US.

First there is the Greater Ozarks Blues Fest in Springfield, MO. They have a great line up  including  Aunt Kizzy'z Boyz, Lil' Ed & the Blues Imperials, Joe Bonamassa,  Anthony Gomes, Leon Russell, and  The North Mississippi All Stars. (See complete information below SCROLL DOWN!)

Here is a video of Aunt Kizzy'z Boyz at finals of the 2006 International Blues Challenge in Memphis. Many of us who were there swore they were the hands down winners. The band finished a respectable second in the finals to 2 time winner Joey Gilmore.

(This Blues fan lost $5 because he was so sure they had won after this performance)

If you come to see them they will win you over too!

Also this weekend if the Sun Prairie Blues Fest in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin.

They have a great lineup too including Wayne Baker Brooks, Shari Davis & the Hootchy-Kootchy Band, Tate’s and the 008 Blues Band,  Queenie and the Blue Cats, The Cashbox Kings, and The Paul Flipowicz Blues Band

Here is a video of headliner Wayne Baker Brooks at a recent show at Buddy Guy's Legends in Chicago.

Wayne Baker Brooks is the next generation of Chicago Blues legends. Wayne is the youngest son of Chicago Blues great Lonnie Brooks.

The Glenn Kaiser performance in Peoria, IL last week was a real acoustic blues treat! IllinoisBlues.com was there and we have pictures for you!

 Blues Basics

NEW to the Blues? Sometimes it is hard for those new to the Blues to explore this journey called the Blues! IllinoisBlues.com 's weekly spotlight introduces (or reminds experienced Blues fans) about a Blues artist or subject worth knowing about. This week we feature Son House.

Born in Mississippi in 1902, Son's fervent singing and slide playing inspired both Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson.

This 1967 video clip of his song "Death Letter" is from near the end of his  career, just two years after he first played Carnegie Hall at the age of 65. He remained active playing and writing until 1969. One of his songs "John The Revelator" was even included in the Blues Brothers 2000 and soundtrack movie after Son had passed on in 1988.

All Music Guide has a biography and a complete discography of Son House. They also include 10 second samples of most of his songs for you to listen to.

 Blues Reviews of the Week!

James “Skyy Dobro” Walker , noted Blues writer and IllinoisBlues.com contributor reviews Rod Piazza's new CD  ThrillVille

Rod Piazza & The Mighty Flyers Blues Quartet - ThrillVille
www.themightyflyers.com
www.deltagroovemusic.com

By James “Skyy Dobro” Walker

14 songs; 60:34 minutes; Excellent

California harmonica master Rod Piazza’s job is to perform blues music and make blues music records. It is a job he does extremely well, but while this latest CD is solid blues in every way, it comes across as exactly that – he did his job. Where is the drive, the spark, the excitement? Having just reviewed last week a truly energetic album by a new band, The Insomniacs, the contrast is too great.

In an unusual move, Piazza has recorded as a quartet with no bass player. His wife Honey on piano handles the bass chores with her left hand. Unfortunately, that takes away the boogie woogie piano solos that were often the best part of a Rod Piazza album and live performance.

Henry Carvajal remains on guitar, expertly filling a role created several band formations ago by Junior Watson. Dave Kida on drums rounds out the quartet, and JohnnyViau and Allen Ortiz add saxophone to five of the 14 tracks.

Given complete creative freedom by Randy Chortkoff, founder of Delta Groove Music, Piazza self-produced ThrillVille as the culmination of 40 years of honing and crafting his music - a heritage that began with the Dirty Blues Band and Bacon Fat, followed by the formation of the Chicago Flying Saucer Band, which ultimately gave birth to the Mighty Flyers.

The result is an album full of diversity that is a good mixture of his spirit, creativity and experience. Expect great covers of Jr. Wells’ “Hoodoo Man Blues” and “Stranger Blues” popularized by Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee plus their own noted groove on “Honey Bee” and Rod experimenting more on vocals with the R&B number “It Can’t Be True.”

While the album won’t ignite any forest fires, Piazza fans will not be disappointed.

 Chicago Blues Update

Live Blues reviews by Chicago Blues editor Lordy

Blues Beat: Chicago, Saturday August 8, 2007 (Photos by August Lord)

Barrelhouse Chuck at the Harlem Ave Lounge.

Being a blues fan in Chicago means you’ve heard of Barrelhouse Chuck.  Considering my relative immersion in the genre for the last few years, it is ironic that this was my first Barrelhouse Chuck gig in years.

Barrelhouse Chuck and the Chicago Blues Cats are purveyors of ragtime, boogie woogie and blues.  Here’s where it gets sappy.  My earliest memory of music was boogie woogie.  Eight-to-the-bar pounded out from my Mom’s piano on a daily basis.  I blame this music and my Mother of course, for my love of boogie’s I-IV-V cousin, the blues.

Barrelhouse Chuck has been mentored by some of blues piano’s greats.  He sprinkles his sets with anecdotes about these men and often relates the “stories behind the songs”.  The keyboard he uses for his organ is a vintage Farfisa, that looks…well…vintage.  I saw this as a museum piece and took several pictures of it.  BChuck even played Pinetop Smith’s original Boogie-Woogie, which I hadn’t heard since my Mom left for boogie heaven.

Guitar duties were handled nicely by Jim St. Marie and the bass job went to Frank Bandy.  Steve Bass on the drums and Frank handled the pocket well, but Chuck’s left hand was probably all the drive they needed.  I never had much appreciation for Question Mark and the Mysterians, but hearing Chuck’s take on Ninety-Six Tears made it new again.

I know my siblings don’t read this, so I can tell you that I bought several CD’s as gifts.  I’m sure that Cow Cow Boogie will transport them back in time.  If you wanted one, Chuck also has an eight-track available (really).  Another example of Barrelhouse Chuck’s reverence for this great music is his website (www.barrelhousechuck.com).

Barrelhouse Chuck is a great entertainer and an interesting individual, so put him on your list of acts to take in while in the Chicago area.   -  Lordy
